Does Empowering Learners mean my Middle School or High School class is OUT OF CONTROL?
Limited Capacity seats available

Sometimes it can seem that empowering learners in your classroom feels like you have lost control. How do you know students are doing what they are supposed to be doing if they are all doing different things? How do you create a culture of learning and discovering information in a classroom instead of just delivering information to them? Let's talk through how to set up systems in a secondary classroom to help this happen where the chaos is "controlled" and learners are empowered!

Differentiated Literature Circles
Limited Capacity filling up

Reading is LIT!

LITerature Circles are a place for students to apply reading and writing skills that are structured around student roles. Often this leads to a whole class reading the same novel at the same time. In this session, I'll share my experience in trying something new! This year I assigned different books to all of my students based on student interest or level . I'll share how I set up LIT Groups and what I've used in my classroom to manage them. I will also have student work samples, fun videos, resources to share, and feedback from students on their experience. We'll open the end up for a Q&A to discuss what others have tried, what is working in other classrooms, and how we might implement some new ideas and try something new!

I can't wait to share how I reignited students passion for reading in my own classroom.

It's Us Against The Board: Modeling Collaboration through Gaming
Limited Capacity seats available

Collaborative table-top (board) games differ from traditional games in that all of the players must work together to overcome a common obstacle rather than compete against each other to determine one winner. The only way to win is to win together. Either the players win or the board wins.

This mode of game play gives each player a unique but equal share of the work, requires each player to think critically and contribute ideas toward the solution, and promotes authentic team bonding. Oh, and it's also FUN!

Tony and Shannon will demonstrate using one of their favorite games in which the players must work together to prevent an emerging virus from becoming a global pandemic. We'll immerse as many attendees into the game play as we can, but fun will be had by players and spectators alike! Come watch, play, discuss, brainstorm, and save the world from certain doom!

This session empowers teacher to shift instruction from a teacher centered to learner centered model in the math classroom. The focus is on using collaborative and problem solving models in the classroom as hook for instruction. This shift can be used with any math curriculum, does not require extra equipment or training, and can be integrated into current math instruction. The training is based on premises from Jo Boaler's Math Mindsets and the Cognitively Guided Instruction model (CGI). Students learn not only to collaborate, but to persist in problem solving, and apply essential knowledge and skills to solve problems in developmentally appropriate ways. The session is designed for students in grades K-8.

Differentiated Literature Circles
Limited Capacity full

Math Mindsets and Learner Centered Math Instruction
Limited Capacity full

Are You There Lake Travis? It's Me, Ties.
Limited Capacity filling up

It’s a coming of age (teacher) story: the shared struggles of maximizing flex time without covering new material, differentiating learning without losing your sanity, reaching toward the upper levels in the LCM without feeling like it’s an impossible endeavor. Join me through the more recent chapters of my ten years of teaching in Lake Travis. Both successes and failures but constantly weighing: What’s worth it? What’s not? What’s the biggest bang for my time and effort? What goes if I add this new thing? Chapters to include flexible scheduling, personalized growth skills, progress monitoring, and those yet to be written. Who knows? Maybe we’ll write the next chapter together.

Harnessing student initiative: Turning learning over to students through learning and collaboration cycles
Limited Capacity filling up

Positive intention is not always enough when we are wanting to turn learning over to students in the classroom. What makes some collaborative work more successful than others? How is it possible that students can actually do the heavy lifting (thinking) in their learning? In this session, we will talk through intentional instruction decisions when designing student-led learning systems in the classroom.

This session will be offering strategic ideas for managing time in the classroom in a way that promotes movement, collaboration, sharing and feedback - ideal for block scheduling and hour-long class time management - for bell to bell learning.

How Can a Teacher Influence the Safety of Students Outside the Classroom?
Limited Capacity seats available

It is well-known that a teacher has the power to affect students far beyond the classroom. The influence of a great educator can easily reach into the home, regarding more than just reading and writing. It may not exactly be the responsibility of the teacher to monitor the child outside the classroom, but certainly what happens with the child outside school doors affects how the child learns and grows. Every teacher knows when a child is not likely receiving proper nutrition, sleep or care at home. But, what about the child’s risk for injury? Could a teacher possibly influence the child and the family so that children are safer when not in the classroom? This in-service will explain the greatest injury risks to children of different ages, how to identify a child at risk and how to positively influence the child’s safety. Keeping a child safe outside the home can also help a child do better inside the classroom!

Limited Capacity seats available

K-2 It’s easy to become overwhelmed by all the tiny, small, but valuable activities you have to fit in during your literacy block. What about spiral reviewing? When can I get to that? How can you make it all flow seamlessly together in an engaging way while also allowing you to manage your classroom and stay on top of the millions of things you’ve got going on? This session will help give you a framework to structure your day so that you can focus on what’s most important - the students in front of you - while still incorporating all the action items on your lesson plan.

Love Your Introverts: Alternatives to Whole Class Presentation and On the Spot Participation
Limited Capacity filling up

As teachers we all want our students to participate, but we also want students to feel safe and comfortable. So how do we reconcile those two goals when it comes to our introverted students? Since I am a person who does not like putting people out of their comfort zones, I have been grappling with this question for the entirety of my teaching career, and I've learned a few things in the last twenty plus years. This session will discuss techniques for making participation safer for introverts. Topics will include: discussion strategies, grouping strategies, and presentation strategies that allow introverts to contribute their quiet but powerful way.
